“I’m not programmed to forgive and forget. I can’t just start chumming around with people who’ve ignored and mocked me for a year. That’s just not me.”
She meant it.
Oh, how she meant it, albeit she said it to the wrong person, one of the few who wanted to be her friend.
Looking at him across her desk at Mars Investigations, she reminded herself that she meant every word and she would be damned if he was going to make a liar out of her.
He’d changed. He was thinner, his face gaunt, his features sharper. In his eyes, she could see the losses he bore and she could see herself reflected in the tears still to be shed. The warmth beneath the amour she’d built around her heart pulsed a little faster in sympathy.
But he needed to know she meant it.
She knew why he was here. He felt exposed, naked, weak. She knew his dirty little secret and the truth behind the façade he’d erected in the wake of his girlfriend’s death, his mother’s. He was there to be with her, to be friends again, sharing pasts and maybe more. Sharing futures. And he was there to make amends, to take back the hurt and anger he had poured on her for so long.
But he couldn’t take it back. And he didn’t know that yet.
He handed her the envelope. She opened it and marveled at his generosity. But then he was rich and the money meant nothing to him. She was not rich and it meant a lot to her. She placed the check in the drawer.
He got up and walked to the door. He turned.
“Hey, Veronica, uh, maybe we, uh, could…”
“Goodbye, Logan.”
She meant it. And now he knew.
